POSTSCRIPT

Dr. Terry Orlick is a professor in the psychology of sport at the University of Ottawa. He recommends “something Frankl refers to as ‘paradoxical intention.’ Instead of trying to get rid of the anxiety, you try to hang on to it, and it goes away by itself. If you get so anxious that you sweat off two pounds before an important event begins, try to sweat off four pounds. Some athletes find this approach very effective. I can recall two recent cases where anxiety-prone athletes felt that it helped performances in competitions which were very important to them. One of the athletes began to get very anxious before his tournament. He asked himself, ‘What am I anxious about?’ Then he said to himself, ‘I’ll show them how anxious I can be. As I tried to heighten my anxiety it went away.’ The other athlete was so anxious before competing in a world title event that she was almost sick to her stomach. Instead of trying to relax away the tension, she tried to experience it to the fullest. She said to herself, ‘I’m so anxious I’m going to be sick.’ Then ‘thought about how ridiculous it was, laughed, and it went away.’” (In Pursuit of Excellence, Ottawa, Coaching Association of Canada, 1980, pp. 124to hear anything like–125.)
